After earning a BA in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, Dr Koby attended University of Louisville Medical School where he became intrigued by the function and design of the human eye. He interned at Barnes Hospital, at Washington University, In St. Louis. After two years in Internal Medicine training at Barnes Hospital he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War. He then returned to the prestigious Barnes Hospital to complete his Ophthalmology residency in 1971.

Dr. Koby started his practice in August 1971 in the Heyburn Building at Fourth and Broadway. Three years later, Dr. David Karp finished his residency and started practicing with him and would later become his partner.
