EYE DOCTORS LOUISVILLE HAS KNOWN FOR YEARS
Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute in Louisville was founded by Doctors Melvyn Koby and David Karp. These two distinguished physicians have been widely recognized for their outstanding skills and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular diseases. Both doctors are certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and are current Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Karp specializes in refractive surgery such as LASIK and small-incision cataract surgery.
EYE CARE LOUISVILLE AREA RESIDENTS TRUST
Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute was established in 1974 and the tradition of excellence has been carried on to the present day. Dr. R. Scott Hoffman, now a full partner in the practice, joined the team in 1998 following specialty training in corneal and external diseases. Dr Hoffman specializes in cataract and intraocular lens implantation surgery, corneal diseases and corneal transplantation. He also evaluates and treats medical disorders of the retina, including diabetic retinopathy.
MELVYN KOBY, M.D. (EMERITUS)
Dr. Melvyn M. Koby has announced that he has officially retired from the practice of ophthalmology as of January 1, 2013.
Dr. Koby, in paraphrasing his father’s retirement remarks, stated, “It is with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye, I find it’s time to tell my patients good-bye.” Dr. Koby further commented, “It has been a privilege to provide eye care for my many patients for over 43 years. I hope that each one will continue to support Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute by transferring care to one of our other excellent physicians. I am sure that all my past patients will continue to be well cared for.”
Dr. Koby has been a pioneer and innovator in Ophthalmology in the Louisville area. After spending time in Russia with Professor Svyatoslav Fyodorov, the inventor of Radial Keratotomy, the predecessor to what is now known as LASIK, Dr. Koby was the first to bring that technology back to the Louisville area in the early 1980’s.
In addition, Dr Koby was the first Ophthalmologist in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to insert an intraocular lens during cataract surgery, which was the earliest version of the procedure that is done today.
Growing up in Louisville where he graduated from Atherton High school in 1956, Dr. Koby worked as a clerk in his father’s drug store, Koby Drug Company, at 2nd and Chestnut.
After earning a BA in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University, Dr Koby attended University of Louisville Medical School where he became intrigued by the function and design of the human eye. He interned at Barnes Hospital, at Washington University, In St. Louis. After two years in Internal Medicine training at Barnes Hospital he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Viet Nam War. He then returned to the prestigious Barnes Hospital to complete his Ophthalmology residency in 1971.
Dr. Koby started his practice in August 1971 in the Heyburn Building at Fourth and Broadway. Three years later, Dr. David Karp finished his residency and started practicing with him and would later become his partner. In 1976 they opened Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute in the Suburban Medical Plaza. In 1986 they moved the practice to their current location in the DuPont Surgery Center in DuPont Circle.

DAVID KARP, M.D.
Dr. David Karp has been in the private practice of Ophthalmology in Louisville since 1974. As a co-founder of the Doctors Eye Institute, he has maintained a tradition of unparalleled excellence in the region. He completed residency training at the University of Wisconsin following medical school at the University of Louisville. Specialty interests include small incision cataract and implant procedures, refractive surgery such as LASIK and PRK and an active interest in glaucoma treatment, with research experience for several pharmaceutical companies. He began performing refractive procedures in the 1970’s, and after thousands of procedures maintains an active practice, currently focusing on refractive and cataract procedures.

R. SCOTT HOFFMAN, M.D.
Dr. R. Scott Hoffman joined Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute in 1998 following fellowship training in the specialty of cornea and external diseases at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. As a graduate of the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky School of Medicine, he completed residency training at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center. His subspecialty interests include management of corneal and anterior segment diseases of the eye, including small incision cataract and lens implant procedures and comprehensive ophthalmology. He also performs screening examinations and treats medical retina disorders such as diabetic retinopathy.
In 2008, Dr. Hoffman was named a full partner in Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute.
Dr. Hoffman has extensive experience in many types of laser procedures including YAG laser capsulotomies and argon laser treatments for retinal diseases and glaucoma. As a comprehensive ophthalmologist, he is available for consultation, examinations and treatment of all forms of ocular disease.

CONNIE L. MEREDITH, M.D.
Dr. Connie L. Meredith returned to Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute following a four year overseas experience working in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
A native of Kentucky, she graduated from the University of Louisville residency program in Ophthalmology in 2002 and has had 20 years experience in eye care. Her particular interests include small incision cataract and lens implant procedures as well as comprehensive ophthalmology. She performs screening examinations and treats medical retina disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. She is available for consultation, examination, and treatment of ocular disease.
Dr. Meredith enjoys coffee, plants, and hiking.

JAMES A. MUSE, O.D.
Koby Karp Doctors Eye Institute welcomes Dr. James Muse to our staff. Dr. Muse earned his Doctorate of Optometry in 1994 from Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tennessee. In July 2016 Dr. Muse received Certification in Surgical and Laser Procedures for the Optometric Physician from Northeastern State University College of Optometry, Tallequah, Oklahoma
Dr. Muse is a Florida native and an enthusiastic college football fan, whose hobbies include traveling, hiking and personal fitness. He has two sons, Jarrod a, recent University of Florida graduate and Caleb who is now serving in US Army.
